Peak Oil Anarchy

Peak Oil is indisputable, inevitable and -- probably -- imminent. As the Cheap Oil era ends & oil supplies grow ever more scarce, our consumerist, earth-eating economy will go into convulsions & industrial civilization will teeter on the brink of collapse. Best be prepared! Peak Oil could herald a Golden Age of Anarchy. In Leviathan's ashes, we could create new decentralized communities of mutual aid, solidarity against oppression, & egalitarian harmony. May this be a map to the terrain ahead!

Jumping From the Sinking Ship of Empire: Vermonters Move to Secede From USA

James Howard Kunstler, author of the book about Peak Oil The Long
Emergency, will be the keynote speaker at The Vermont Convention
on Independence to be held in the House Chamber of the State House in Montpelier, VT on Friday, October 28th, 2005. Sponsored by the Second Vermont Republic, the convention, which will begin at 9 am and conclude at 5 pm, is open to the public and free of charge. This historic event will be the first statewide convention on secession in the United States since North Carolina voted to secede from the Union on May 20, 1861.

Organizers of the convention say it has two objectives: First, to raise the level of awareness of Vermonters of the feasibility of independence as a viable alternative to a nation
which has lost its moral authority and is unsustainable. And second, to provide an example and a process for other states and nations which may be seriously considering separatism, secession, independence, and similar devolutionary strategies. The Second Vermont Republic describes itself as "a peaceful, democratic, grassroots, libertarian populist movement committed to the return of Vermont to its status as an in
dependent republic as it once was between 1777 and 1791."

Earlier this year, Vermont secession activists published their opening salvo, the Middlebury Institute Letter. It declared: "We believe that, of the options open to those who would dissent from the actions and institutions of a government grown too big and unwieldy and its handmaiden corporate sponsors grown too powerful and corrupt, the o
nly comprehensive and practical one is some form of separatism. Exploring this option is not a step to be taken lightly, because there are established forces that will hamper and resist, and yet it is a legal and viable enterprise, squarely in the American tradition...

"Moreover, the accumulating signs point to a series of major crises that will seriously disrupt and may even destroy the American system in the near future. These include economic disruptions in the wake of global “peak oil” production before 2010, deterioration of the power of the dollar through mounting and uncontrollable national debt and trade imbalances, continued degradation of vital ecosystems on which the nation depends, climate change and severe weather causing widespread devastation of coastal areas, extended use of military force worldwide leading to increased terrorism and the reinstitution of the draft, [and] judicial takeovers at the Federal level by rightwing ideologues capable of altering fundamental legal rights... Those who want to absent and cushion themselves from suchlike devastations would reasonably want to explore ways of removing their communities and regions from dangerous national political and economic mechanisms that are incapable of reform." If Vermont can pioneer a peaceful method of secession then it would be a good thing for the nation. We need a viable choice to the tyranny of an increasingly unconstitutional regime in Washington DC.

I believe it is possible. In any case, it's worth exploring the possibility. I plan to attend.

Kunstler is a Hobbesian asshole who takes great Schadenfreude delight at Suburbanites no longer being able to live their lifestyles and crashing. He thinks we're all a bunch of pansies, and I think he's an asshole! He wants us to work harder. Fuck working harder! I want to work a whole hell of a lot less! Fuck his doomsday ideas and his Calvinist attitudes. What the fuck do they have to do with anarchy? Bringing Leviathan down means bringing Hobbes down.

(un)leash said the same thing here http://anti-politics.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=771 and i responded at length -- no need to do so again. i don't think he has actually read anything kunstler has written. kunstler's central message is that "the country will pay dearly unless it urgently develops new, sustainable community-scale food systems, energy sources, and living patterns." for someone who wants to work less, (un)leash, you sure do spend a lot of time being an anti-kunstlerian troll. you'd do better to go outside and plant a garden. suburbia is not sustainable. it's not "hobbesian" to point that out, it's simply realistic.

kunstler ain't no anarchist (he's actually a centrist democrat) but his extropalations are a giant step towards post-peak/collapse anarchy for anyone who takes them seriously. that's why he's such a favorite whipping boy for anyone who wants to preserve the status quo...

steve, qrswave and moses, thanks for posting your comments!! i think you're the first people to post real ones here, come back soon! i'll post a report after the vermont secession conference, if i manage to get a ride there --- anyone from philly / new jersey / nyc area driving to it & got room to spare?

Godspeed on the secessionist movement. It's been a long time coming. Partner up with your boys in NH and git 'er done! Hopefully, my state(CO)and others out West will free themselves from DC, also.

The last time secession was attempted, it didn't go too well for the "secessionists". The Federal Government is not going to allow any State to secede and I doubt that Vermont has the military and industrial capability necessary to confront the U.S. Army. LOL.

    Well, hell.

Bless those Vermonters' pea-pickin' lil hearts.

It was bound to start somewhere on the road to the final secession, that of the individual.

JJGNC - And what a great embarrassement and political reputation hit it would be for the Federal government if it were to authorize the oppression of Vermont via the military...

and by this time, the US military will only be concerned with securing oil resources in the Persian Gulf region and other regions to even have enough men to enforce order over the nation-wide anarchy. Plus, if they couldn't control hurricane relief efforts, would responding to the seccesionist movement be any easier?
